What is good quality sleep?

Good quality sleep is the foundation of a good quality life. You need to eat well, breathe well, have good nutrition, good gut health, good movement and a balanced nervous system to achieve good quality sleep. When these systems aren’t optimised it can feel like you are in constant battle with your little one over sleep. You may also find your little one is very dysregulated through the day too.

Standard sleep consultants approach sleep from a behaviourism point of view, using strategies and settling to achieving a greater quantity of sleep. This doesn’t address the quality of sleep, which is why a fully holistic wellness approach is needed.

When your little one is achieving good quality sleep, they will be well rested, wake up happy from sleep and be happy through the day. They will have pretty good emotional regulation most of the time and be able to stay awake for an age appropriate amount of time. Their night sleep will be a lot more predictable and manageable.

Improving sleep quality creates a beautiful foundation for a life of optimum wellness!

What does sleep look like when it quality isn’t at it’s best?

Key indicators of less than optimal sleep quality include:

  • Catnapping less than 40 minutes

  • Waking up more frequently than every 2 hours at night

  • Excessive night waking (more than 2-3 wakes per night depending on age)

  • Conditional settling (will only sleep a particular way. For example in a car, pram, swing, carrier, breastfeeding)

  • Taking a long time to settle to sleep or resisting sleep

  • Sleeping more than would be considered age appropriate

  • Unable to make age appropriate awake time

  • Sleep feels like a real struggle or you feel like they aren’t getting quality sleep.

If your little person is consistently doing any of these, there would definitely be some things we can work on to optimise sleep.

No sleep training or strategy needed

Sleep is a biological function, just like breathing. It means that you can’t change the quality of it with behavioural approach such as sleep training.

The idea that sleep quality can be changed with training is outdated and unsupported by research. Good quality sleep can only be achieved by addressing the underlying reason that is causing a little person to struggle with sleep.

Sleep is a complex, multi-system process that works very well, without struggle, once you remove the blocks that are affecting sleep.
